Textile Industry Exports

In July 25, 2008, the Vietnamese government held an executive meeting on the development strategy of the textile and garment industry. Its deputy prime minister, Hoang Trung Hai, stressed the importance of improving the quality, increasing the competitiveness of domestic enterprises and products, and strengthening the supply of raw materials.

The issues highlighted by the Deputy Prime Minister include encouraging scientific research, promoting product branding and fashion design, land and infrastructure policies and so on.

The meeting was held in order to achieve the government's goal. The production of textiles and clothing will reach 16-18 per cent, and the export will grow by 20% over the next two years.

As a result, the textile industry expects to earn $14 billion 800 million in 2010 and about $31 billion in 2020.

It also aims to export $12 billion in 2010 and $25 billion in 2020.

To achieve this goal, the government focuses on making use of local raw materials, seeking more investment, improving quality, expanding market and strengthening human resources development, upgrading design, using advanced technology, strengthening quality control and overcoming export barriers.

The vice premier also claimed that the demand for cotton fibers in the country is large and stable. If Vietnam's textile and clothing industry can meet this requirement, it will enhance the value competitiveness of its products.

Cotton production is expected to rise to 20 thousand tons in 2010 and 60 thousand tons by 2020.

The government also plans to set up a textile and garment industrial park and seek more local and foreign investment in various fields such as dyeing, weaving and cotton production, synthetic fibers and other materials.

Exploring traditional markets such as the United States, the European Union and Japan, and seeking other new markets are also considered as a necessary step in developing the overall industry.

Moreover, the government has also called for the relocation of polluting factories to industrial areas in order to better deal with dangerous chemicals.

In addition, human resources development will focus on fashion design, fabric analysis, and production and sales management.
